Welcome to the Henry Clay High School Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) website.
Army JROTC began at Henry Clay during the 1997-1998 school year. Junior ROTC is a series of elective high school courses taught by retired military personnel with a goal of motivating participants to be better Americans.
JROTC prepares students for life, not the military. Classes are taught during regular school hours. However, many out-of -classroom activities are also included. We cover the basics in history, government, technology awareness, diet, exercise, and current events. We also teach leadership skills (how to motivate others) and personal skills (how to study, take test, interview for jobs, personal finances, etc.). JROTC also offers extracurricular activities such as Drill Team, Color Guard, Raider Team, Rifle Team, and Academic Team. Students even have a chance to go to JROTC summer camp where they train cadets through confidence courses, play team sports, learn water safety techniques, and further develop their map reading and land navigation skills. JROTC program prepares students for life after high school by providing them with leadership skills. Cadets also have a chain of command, which is similar to the "Pyramid of Authority" in the work force. Cadets gain this experience by leading the program themselves with guidance of the instructors, Maj. Larkin and SFC Hunt.
No JROTC cadet is under any obligation to join the military. Our interest is simply to provide students with an opportunity for self development in ways other courses generally don't offer. We aren't promoting the military lifestyle. We do, however, use military skills to teach self-discipline, confidence, and pride in a job well done. Additionally, as a practical living course, the JROTC curriculum enhances the Kentucky Core Content standards for learning.
